Chapter 01
What wears down a ductless system before it fails
A mini-split is compact, versatile and energy efficient, which is why more Yakima Valley homeowners are choosing them, especially for older houses where running new ductwork makes little sense. They give precise temperature control, room by room, and a well-installed head is quiet enough that you stop noticing it. They still need looking after, and the problems we are called to are almost always the slow, dull kind.
The indoor filter loads up first. Once airflow drops, the head works harder for less comfort, and dust and film start to build on the indoor coil behind the cover. Outside, the condenser collects leaves and debris. Across the valley, cottonwood season is the worst of it: we have photographed outdoor coils matted brown with fluff, and a coil that cannot breathe cannot shed heat.
The one that surprises people is refrigerant. Low refrigerant cuts cooling capacity, so a unit that runs all afternoon and never quite catches up may not be undersized at all. It may be low, and low refrigerant means there is a leak to find, not just a number to top up and forget.

How a ductless install goes, step by step
We install, maintain and repair mini-splits on all makes and models, and every job starts the same way. Assessment comes first: we look at the size of the room, the insulation, and how much cooling it actually needs. Then planning. We lay out single-room and multi-zone options so the system fits your needs and your budget before anything is ordered or mounted.
Next the indoor units go up, placed deliberately so the air spreads evenly instead of dumping on one chair or one bed. The outdoor unit goes where it can work at its best: placed to maximize efficiency, keep noise down, and reduce how much it shows from the street or the patio. The last step is the refrigerant and electrical connections, which is where careful work matters most, because a sloppy line set shows up as a service call a year later.
Placement is not only about the wall. One customer, Jeff Markel, had Cris and crew install a three-head mini-split on a fixer-upper with a tight timeline, and he wrote that they “mounted gear on slab instead of putting all that weight on the south side of house.” His own summary was: “The three head mini split installed means I can finish on this fixer upper way before spring now.” (Jeff Markel, Google)
Chapter 03
Keeping a mini-split healthy, and when to call again
Clean or replace the air filters on the interval the manufacturer gives for your unit, and keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves and debris. Those two habits do more than any single repair.
The rest is a technician's job. Schedule a visit to clean the condenser coil, which is the job that clears a cottonwood mat properly. Have the indoor coils inspected and cleaned, because the film behind the cover is not something to reach for with a household spray. And have the refrigerant levels checked, so a slow leak is caught while it is still a small repair.
Call us again when the room no longer reaches temperature the way it did last season, when a head stops answering its remote, or when a unit that was quiet has gone noisy. Estimates are free and carry no obligation, financing and payment plans are available on installations, and we work in homes and businesses from Yakima out to Selah, Moxee, Wapato, Toppenish, Zillah and Sunnyside.
